Print this pageSolicitors’ Classic Marathon Challenge For Big C

Back in 490 BC, an Athenian messenger by the name of Phiedippides ran from the battlefield of Marathon to the city of Athens, bringing news of victory - and setting the scene for marathons to enter the world of sport...

Now, 2,500 years later, three intrepid solicitors from Cozens-Hardy LLP in Norwich will be attempting the same momentous journey and they, too, hope to bring with them news of great success, for local cancer charity Big C.

The Athens Marathon celebrates its 2500th anniversary on Sunday 31st October 2010 and on that day Principals Chris Groves, Philippa Rudd and Iain White will run in the very footsteps of the ancient gods and heroes that gave birth to western civilisation, hoping to cross the finish line in Athens’ magnificent Olympic Stadium, the birthplace of the modern Olympic Games. And hoping to raise a significant amount of money for Big C.

Marathon

Says Philippa: “The Athens Marathon is recognised as the original marathon course and it’s the same course as used in the 2004 Olympics, so it’s a really exciting event to be a part of, especially this year with their momentous 2500th anniversary celebrations. Most importantly, this is a great opportunity to help us towards our target of raising £5,000 for Big C in this their 30th anniversary year.”

Philippa, who has successfully completed four marathons, including London and New York, will be aiming for a sub four hours finish, but admits that the course is particularly gruelling:

“It’s a really, really tough course, with the middle section all uphill, so I will be over the moon if I do achieve a sub four hours time; whatever my time, to take the finish line in the magnificent Olympic Stadium will be quite an experience I’m sure!”

For marathon novices Chris Groves and Iain White, it is simply all about that finishing line – and securing the vital pledges from their supporters.

Adds Chris:

“Cozens-Hardy has been delighted to be part of Big C’s ‘30for30’ campaign this year, as one of 30 local firms each aiming to raise £5,000 for this terrific charity. We are well on the way to hitting our target and hope that all three of us cross that famous finishing line and, in doing so, swell Big C’s coffers even further...”
