Employers: Don't forget the 6th April
Natalie Peacock, Chartered Legal Executive in our Business team, gives the lowdown on key increases affecting employment claims and wages.
Now Easter is over, employers must turn their attention to the increases to the statutory limits applicable to claims which take effect from this Saturday, 6th April 2024.
Unfair Dismissal
The highest compensatory award available for unfair dismissal claims is the lower of a year’s salary or the statutory cap.
As from 6th April 2024 the statutory cap will increase to £115,115.
The basic award for unfair dismissal claims is the lower of a week’s pay or the statutory cap.
As from 6th April 2024 the statutory cap for a week’s pay will increase to £700.
Redundancy Pay
The statutory cap on a week’s pay for redundancy pay will also increase to £700.
Discrimination / Injury to Feeling
The Vento bands of awards for injury to feelings in discrimination claims will be increased as follows:-
Lower Band (less serious cases) - £1,200 to £11,700
Middle Band (cases that do not merit an award in the upper band) - £11,700 to £35,200
Upper Band (most serious cases) - £35,200 to £58,700
Exceptional Cases - cases capable of exceeding £58,700
National Minimum Wage
The rates of National Minimum Wage (from yesterday, 1st April):
Apprentice - £6.40 per hour
16 to 17 year olds - £6.40 per hour
18 to 20 year olds - £8.60 per hour
21 and over - £11.44 per hour
